Information
A survivor from the Jurassic era, the Wollemia nobilis (dubbed “Wollemi pine”™) is a contemporary of those other living fossils, cycads.
After verification of its existence it was declared a new genus, and the exact location of the single grove of these very special trees has been kept a closely guarded secret ever since. Seeds and cuttings were collected from the grove to establish an off-site colony in order to preserve the species in case of a catastrophe such as wildfire or disease. From this initial propagation, second-generation cuttings were taken and contracted out to a limited number of growers around the world.
Every tree sold returns a royalty to help conserve this and other threatened plant species. These rare and fascinating trees are hardy to our area and can be planted outdoors. They require good drainage, regular fertilizing with a low phosphorous fertilizer, and a clear radius of about eight feet. Over winter the trees develop a white waxy cap on the growing buds, which insulates them from temperature extremes.
The Wollemi pine is a rare treasure and makes a stunning focal point for any garden.
